Selling on SA Thrift vs. Donating: How Neighbors Decide
You're staring at a garage full of stuff that needs to go. Some of it could be cash, some of it should help somebody, and some of it just needs to disappear today. Here's how to sort it out.
Sell it on SA Thrift when…
- It's worth real money. Furniture, tools, bikes, electronics, collectibles, anything you'd be annoyed to give away — list it and let local buyers come to you. No shipping, no fees, cash in hand.
- You have enough for a sale. A dozen-plus decent items justifies a Saturday garage sale. Post it on the Deal Board and the weekend view does your advertising.
- It's seasonal. Holiday decor in November, patio furniture in spring, heaters in fall — timing matters, and local buyers are shopping for the season right now.
Donate it when…
Everyday clothes, kitchen basics, books, kids' gear in decent shape — the stuff that's useful but not worth your Saturday. Donation is faster than selling, and San Antonio's thrift stores turn it into someone else's find the same week.
Curb-alert it when…
Bulky, functional, but low-value: the old-but-working microwave, the scratched bookshelf, the box of cables. Post a curb alert and it'll vanish within the hour — faster than loading the car for a donation run.
The honest rule of thumb
If pricing it, photographing it, and meeting a buyer feels worth the money — sell. If the thought exhausts you — donate. If it needs to be gone by tonight — curb. Most cleanouts end up using all three, and that's exactly right.
