Moving Sale Checklist: The San Antonio Countdown (4 Weeks to Sale Day)

A moving sale is a garage sale with a deadline — and that's actually an advantage. Everything must go, buyers can smell it, and priced-right furniture moves fast when the moving truck is already booked. The difference between a calm sell-out and a chaotic giveaway is doing things in the right order. Here's the San Antonio countdown, four weeks out to sale day.

A moving sale being set up in a San Antonio driveway with labeled boxes, tables, and furniture priced to sell

4 weeks out: decide what isn't moving

  • Walk room by room with three labels: taking it, selling it, donating it. Be honest — moving costs money by the box and by the pound, and shipping a particle-board bookshelf across the state rarely beats selling it here.
  • Measure your new place. The sectional that fits your current living room may not fit the next one. Furniture that doesn't fit is sale inventory, not a moving problem.
  • Pick the sale date now. A Saturday two to three weeks before moving day is ideal — close enough to feel urgent, far enough that leftovers still have options.

3 weeks out: get the permit and start the sort

Get your city permit. Inside San Antonio city limits, a moving sale needs the same garage sale permit as any other sale: it costs $16, you're allowed one sale per quarter per address, and sale hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The permit must be in hand before sale day, so don't leave it to the morning of. Our San Antonio garage sale permit guide covers where to buy one and every rule that comes with it.

  • Start staging the sell pile in the garage or a spare room, grouped by category: furniture, kitchen, tools, kids, decor.
  • Test everything electronic as you sort. "It works — I plugged it in yesterday" sells; "it worked when we stored it" doesn't.

2 weeks out: price it and post it

  • Price everything. Individual stickers beat a "make me an offer" table. As a rule of thumb, common household goods move at a small fraction of their new price; solid furniture and quality tools hold more. Price to sell, not to store — whatever doesn't sell, you're paying to move or scrambling to donate.
  • Photograph the big pieces in daylight and post your sale on the SA Thrift Deal Board. Hunters plan their routes days ahead, and a listing posted early gets saved far more than one posted Friday night.
  • List headline furniture individually. A great couch, dining set, or tool chest deserves its own listing with photos — those are the items shoppers drive across town for.

1 week out: supplies and signs

  • Supplies run: price stickers, markers, tables (borrow or rent), bags for buyers, an extension cord so shoppers can test electronics, and a cash float of small bills and coins.
  • Plan your signs — the city allows three, and our sign guide covers the rules. Signs can go up two days before the sale.
  • Tell the neighbors. A heads-up about Saturday parking earns goodwill — and neighbors are buyers too.

Sale day

  • Open on time — 9 a.m. at the earliest under your permit — with furniture at the front of the driveway where drivers can see it rolling past.
  • Keep the house closed. Sale happens in the driveway and garage; the front door stays shut and locked.
  • Drop prices after midday. By early afternoon, the goal flips from profit to empty rooms. Bundle deals move piles: "everything on this table, one price."

After the sale: the 48-hour cleanup

Whatever's left has three exits: post a free curb alert for the bulky leftovers, schedule a donation pickup for the rest, and box the small stuff for a drop-off run. Set the deadline before the sale starts — leftovers with no deadline become boxes you pay to move.

Moving soon? Post your moving sale free on SA Thrift — one listing puts it in front of every garage-sale hunter in San Antonio, and the good furniture will be spoken for before the truck arrives.

FAQ

Do I need a permit for a moving sale in San Antonio?

Yes — a moving sale uses the same city garage sale permit. It costs $16, allows one sale per quarter per address, and sale hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Get it before sale day; our permit guide has the details.

When should I hold my moving sale?

Two to three weeks before moving day is the sweet spot: early enough that unsold leftovers can still be donated or curb-alerted, late enough that buyers feel the must-go pricing.

What do I do with moving sale leftovers?

Post a free curb alert for bulky pieces, schedule a donation pickup for the rest, and drop off small items. Decide the plan before the sale so leftovers never end up on the moving truck.
