Christmas is Friday, Dec 25 — and thrift stores are the holiday's worst-kept secret. Ornaments that cost $12 a box at retail sell in bags for a couple of dollars, whole ceramic villages turn up intact, and the gift math changes completely. But thrifting Christmas runs on deadlines: the décor window, the gift window, and — if you're mailing presents — the post office's hard dates. Here they all are.

Décor: shop by mid-November

Holiday stock hits thrift shelves from late October, and the good stuff — ornament sets, wreaths, garlands, stockings, tree skirts, ceramic village houses — is picked over by Thanksgiving. Two field rules: ask to plug in any string lights before you buy (stores will let you test them), and buy ornaments by the bag or box, never one by one. Start with the store directory and make a two-store run this week; by mid-November you'll be shopping leftovers.

Gifts: where thrift wins
