New Year Reset in San Antonio: Thrift the Organization, Donate by Dec 31, and the Honest Truth About January Clearance
New Year’s Day is Friday, Jan 1, 2027 — and every January, San Antonio makes the same promise: this is the year the closets, the garage, and that one junk drawer finally get handled. Retail answers that promise with a wall of brand-new plastic bins at full price. Thrift answers it better, in both directions: the organization gear you need is already on secondhand shelves for a few dollars, and the clutter you clear out is exactly what fills those shelves for the next person. Here is the whole reset, in the order that actually works — donate and sell in December, organize in January, and shop the fresh stock everyone else just gave up.
First, the honest truth about January clearance
As of this writing (Nov 1, 2026), Goodwill San Antonio has announced no January clearance or New Year sale — its events page lists November events only, including the Gateway store’s $3 clothing Road Construction Sale running weekdays Nov 2–30. No other San Antonio thrift chain has posted a January sale on its official pages either. So do not plan your reset around a banner that does not exist yet. If a January sale is announced, it will appear on that events page first — and on our Deal Board, where verified store sales get posted as they are confirmed.
Here is why January is a great thrift month anyway, with no sale at all: December is the biggest donation month of the year, and January shoppers inherit it. Goodwill San Antonio’s own FAQ explains the flow — donated goods become store inventory, and items still unsold after five weeks move to its outlets, sold in bulk or by the pound. The fresh December drop-offs are the stock hitting floors through January. The “clearance” is real; it just looks like full, fresh shelves at everyday thrift prices instead of a percentage-off sign.
What to thrift for the reset (and what to skip)
- Storage bins and boxes — the January prize. Clear bins, lidded boxes, and file boxes, donated by everyone who bought new sets last January. Check lids match and plastic is not cracked.
- Baskets — woven and wire baskets for shelves, closets, and the entryway drop zone. A matching set of three looks planned, not patched together.
- Shelving and small bookcases — solid wood and metal shelving turns up constantly in January as households rearrange. Measure your wall and your trunk before you go.
- Glass jars and canisters — pantry reset staples. Buy the run with matching lids; orphan jars are only a deal if you already own the lid.
- Hangers, drawer dividers, and closet organizers — small, cheap, and always in stock. Buy hangers by the bundle.
- Furniture that stores things — dressers, storage ottomans, and cabinets with doors. January is moving and rearranging season, so selection runs deep; our store directory covers 29 San Antonio thrift, consignment, and vintage stores to work through.
- Skip at thrift prices: worn-out plastic bins with missing lids, and anything “organization” you do not have a named shelf, drawer, or closet for. A bin without a job is just future clutter with a lid.
The Dec 31 side of the reset: donating what you clear out
The reset has a deadline, and it is not Jan 1 — it is Dec 31, 2026. The IRS is plain about the rule: for a charitable contribution to count for a tax year, it must be made by December 31 of that year, and you can only deduct it if you itemize. Goodwill San Antonio is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, its FAQ confirms donated goods in good used condition or better are tax-deductible, and you receive a receipt at drop-off — keep it for your records. One more IRS detail from the same FAQ: if the fair market value of your donated property tops $500, you will need IRS Form 8283; the charity itself cannot put a dollar value on your items.
Goodwill San Antonio accepts items that are clean, complete, and sellable “as is” — clothing, electronics, furniture, and household goods, with no limit on quantity, and free home pickup for bulky items. It cannot accept: mattresses and box springs, sleeper sofas, refrigerators and water heaters, tires and auto parts, batteries, baby furniture, construction material, CRT monitors and tube TVs, or guns and ammunition. Sort with that list open and you will not load a truck the donation door has to refuse. More than 30 Goodwill donation centers serve the area — find yours from the directory link below.
Sell it instead? That door is open too
Some of what you clear out is worth money, not just a receipt. The honest split most San Antonio households land on: donate the everyday clothing, kitchen extras, and decor; sell the furniture, tools, brand-name pieces, and anything with a collector. On SA Thrift, posting is free — join free, list the good pieces, and let January’s organizers come to you. Planning a bigger clear-out? A January garage sale rides the same reset wave: buyers are hunting storage and furniture, and our weekend sales map is where shoppers plan their Saturday routes.
Do not forget the tree: city recycling in the first two weeks of January
A live Christmas tree is the one piece of holiday clutter the city handles for you — on a schedule. The City of San Antonio’s Solid Waste Management Department runs Christmas tree drop-off locations during the first two weeks of January each year; the trees are mulched, and the mulch is then available to customers. The rules, from the city’s own page: live trees only; if your tree is over 6 feet, cut it in half; remove all lights, decorations, and stands, even wooden ones; do not bag the tree; and no live wreaths, garlands, or plants are accepted. Brush loads must be covered under the city’s Tarp Law — an uncovered load can draw a $5 penalty.
In January 2026 the four centers were Culebra Road (7030 Culebra Road), Frio City Road (1531 Frio City Road), and Rigsby Road (2755 Rigsby Road) — Tuesday–Friday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m.–12 p.m. — plus the Bitters Brush Recycling Center (1800 Wurzbach Parkway), Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–5 p.m., all running Jan 3–14. The city has not yet posted its January 2027 dates; check the city’s Christmas Tree Drop-Off page in late December for the confirmed 2027 dates and hours before you load the truck. Questions about any specific item go to the city at 3-1-1 or (210) 207-6000.
Your reset, week by week
December, one room a week: sort into keep, donate, and sell piles. Donations out the door before Dec 31 if the tax year matters to you; listings posted while buyers are still gift-hunting. Between Christmas and New Year: strip the tree and holiday decor, box what stays, and note the city tree dates. First two weeks of January: drop the tree for mulching, then shop — this is peak fresh-stock season for bins, baskets, and shelving. Late January: work the Deal Board and the weekend map for estate and moving sales; January movers price storage furniture to go. FAQ
When is New Year’s Day 2027?
Friday, January 1, 2027.
Has Goodwill San Antonio announced a January clearance sale?
No — not as of Nov 1, 2026. Its official events page lists November sales only. If a January sale is announced, it will appear on goodwillsa.org/events first, and we will post it to the Deal Board the day it is confirmed.
Why are January thrift shelves so full if there is no sale?
December is the year’s biggest donation month, driven by the Dec 31 tax deadline and holiday clear-outs. Those donations become January’s store inventory, so selection is at its best even at everyday prices.
What is the last day to donate for the 2026 tax year?
December 31, 2026. Per the IRS, a contribution must be made by Dec 31 of the tax year to count for that year, and it is deductible only if you itemize. Get the receipt at drop-off and keep it.
What will Goodwill San Antonio not accept?
Per its official FAQ: mattresses and box springs, sleeper sofas, refrigerators, water heaters, tires and auto parts, batteries, baby furniture, construction material, CRT monitors and tube TVs, and guns or ammunition.
When and where can I recycle a live Christmas tree in San Antonio?
The city runs drop-off locations during the first two weeks of January each year and mulches the trees. The 2026 centers were Culebra Road, Frio City Road, Rigsby Road, and the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, Jan 3–14 — the city posts the confirmed January 2027 dates on its Christmas Tree Drop-Off page in late December. Trees must be undecorated, unbagged, and cut in half if over 6 feet.
Should I donate my clear-out or sell it?
Donate the everyday clothing, kitchen extras, and decor — fast, and receipted if you beat Dec 31. Sell the furniture, tools, and brand-name pieces: posting on SA Thrift is free, and January buyers are actively hunting storage and organization finds.
